Case Study: Microsoft

US search marketing agency Point It was running a successful global search campaign for Microsoft Store, but the only country they needed to activate was China.

They reached out to Nanjing Marketing Group, and we planned and operated the campaign for Chinese search engines Baidu, 360 Search, and Sogou.

Our strategy:

  • Plan and operate search advertising across China’s major engines
  • Adapt global SEM playbooks to local search behaviour and policy requirements
  • Continuously optimize bids, keywords, and creatives to hit strict return-on-ad-spend targets

Results:

  • Exceeded Microsoft’s ROAS target of 400%, reaching peaks of 1,200%
  • Established reliable, scalable on-site purchase growth within China
  • Integrated smoothly with Microsoft Store’s global paid search operations

“NMG has been a great partner to complement Microsoft Store’s global paid search efforts in an otherwise challenging market.

NMG is able to quickly adapt to changes with consistent results, while their knowledgeable staff is quick to respond, willing to help, and always on the lookout for testing and growth opportunities.”

– Ben Carson, Global SEM Manager, Microsoft

Case Study: Economy Bookings

Since November 2023, we have been promoting car rental platform Economy Bookings. This established marketplace platform offers its services in many countries globally, and when the time came to target Chinese customers, Economy Bookings contacted NMG.

Our strategy:

  • Run Baidu ads to drive targeted traffic to short and long-tail keywords.
  • Audit the Chinese website to provide actionable localization advice.

Results (as of Oct 2025):

  • Chinese conversions on average per month – 81
  • Return on ad spend (ROAS) on average per month – 391%

Baidu Advertising Service FAQ

Yes. Usually, you only need to submit your business license and bank statement (with some sensitive information removed). Businesses in some industries will require additional licenses.

Yes. We can help you create a Baidu-hosted microsite, a standalone Chinese website, or Chinese content for your current website.

We use them very often. Search ads are great for people searching for what you sell; however, newsfeed ads should be used more sparingly, depending on the situation. This is based on our experience primarily running ads for service-based businesses that want to attract leads. However, newsfeed ads are still useful for increasing exposure and reaching broader audiences.

Yes, you can use a video in the ad formats. Check out this blog to learn more.

Jimuyu is a new landing page solution developed by Baidu; the biggest advantage of using this tool is that it loads rapidly in China.

Also, companies operating in healthcare, consumer goods, and logistics must use Jimuyu landing pages.

Optimization is ongoing: We will always test improvements and coordinate with you on a strategic level.

We generally update reporting data in Google Looker reports once per week. Some clients also view data directly in their Baidu account, although the interface is in Chinese.

The reports have an English-language interface. Keywords are shown in Chinese, with keyword data AI-translated into English. Sometimes the AI translation is incorrect, but it’s fine for over 90% of keywords.

We do not target a specific type of Baidu user. In search advertising, we target people based on their search intent.

Baidu advertising is a very rapid style of marketing. We can often have a campaign running within two weeks (as long as you’re quick with the documentation). From that point, three general scenarios occur:

    1. It’s best to plan for a scenario where we will get traffic and inquiries within the first week. However, Chinese consumers are demanding and will have feedback about what your offering lacks. As a team, we must listen to them and respond by improving the offer and marketing. This result is most likely if you aren’t ready for Chinese-level competition yet, as it is a step above everywhere else.
    2. It’s not unlikely that Baidu’s marketing efforts will immediately bridge the gap between your offer and customers. This result is most common if you already have Chinese customers and want to expand.
    3. You may also get traffic, but very few strong leads. This indicates a major mismatch between your offering and what Baidu users want.

We will use your ads for inspiration, especially ones with a strong performance on Google. However, we will create all the Chinese ads (text and images) from scratch. We will share the AI-translated English version of the ads with you for discussion.

Yes. You must provide us with a certificate of incorporation/business license and a bank statement to show that the same entity holds the legal business, website, and bank account. We will show you more details during the sales or setup process.

The first thing that holds up the process is when a client needs to send us the documentation in advance. The second most common issue that can cause delays is when Baidu requests additional documentation or changes to the website. Because we’ve processed hundreds of account applications, we can usually predict these ahead of time, saving you time.

They might request that a certain page or topic be removed, for example, a page related to crypto investments.

We charge a launch fee and a flat ongoing monthly fee. This is determined based on our estimation of the work hours required.

No. The nature of the Chinese language allows us to add more content to Baidu ads. Plus, various ad formats on Baidu are not the same as Google.

In our consultation process, we will consider multiple options and let you know if we see a better opportunity. While Baidu is the #1 place we spend ad money, we also advertise on WeChat, Rednote, Douyin, and Bilibili. We sometimes even acquire traditional banner ads and advertorials on websites. That’s not to mention organic marketing and influencers.

Potential clients sometimes struggle to understand that Baidu advertising has multiple levels of service. Some agencies won’t be as proactive, and you will need to tell them “add this keyword” or “remove these,” and they will just implement it for you.

Nanjing Marketing Group will communicate with you on this level (if you want), but also coordinate with you strategically to discuss how to better serve your future customers.

Baidu Ads generally requires a corporate business license for account applications. However, exceptions apply to certain specialized industries, such as the legal profession. In such cases, you may submit an individual lawyer’s practice certificate together with an individual business license.
